(i wasn’t sure if you wanted a mertalia au but here it is. the little mermaid femEng/Can au)
Matthew can’t sing, can’t dance, not like this, not with his throat still shredded from the witch’s spell, not with his gait so unsteady still. These feet can’t carry him, not like his fins did once upon a time. He used to race ahead of the ocean swells, darting so quickly with swishes of his tail.
Matthew sits on the beach and shudders, hands covering his face and thinking of the beautiful princess in the castle. Elaine had loved him in the water, had treaded her fingers in his hair, had led him to her lips when she found him bare and terribly human.
Of course it was love’s true kiss. But speaking is difficult, because magic has always been cruel, and he has nothing to his name, no proof of the royal blood he knows lights his veins.
Matthew is her lover, her confidant. She still loves him, even if she touches his legs with a wistful sigh, splayed out beside him in her bed.
But today she marries, and it is not to him, and Matthew knows tomorrow she will call him back to her chambers and that her husband will pretend not to see, but this is still not the ending Matthew wanted.
